DVC 3 Showcase
“Monarca’s” reimagines design as a platform for immigrant storytelling, blending visual power with social purpose. The series uses rich, saturated colors and dynamic compositions inspired by Latin American protest art to capture movement and emotion. Bilingual typography bridge's cultural identity and accessibility, while the monarch butterfly symbolizes migration, renewal, and collective strength. Each poster balances striking visuals with essential information about legal and workplace rights, ensuring the designs are both expressive and practical. By featuring real community members and layered, textured imagery, “Monarca’s” transforms advocacy into art, celebrating immigrants not as subjects of struggle, but as the creative, resilient core of community life.

Make it stand out
This video centers on individuals sharing their personal stories of coming to America and the struggles they faced, the sacrifices they made, and the journeys that shaped who they are today. Through their voices, Monarca becomes a space for reflection on migration, resilience, and hope. The video honors lived experiences that are often unheard, highlighting strength found in vulnerability and the courage it takes to begin again. By focusing on storytelling, this project preserves memory, builds empathy, and celebrates the perseverance behind every journey

My Communities:
We were asked to work on mapping my personal community, identifying the people, places, customs, and rituals that shape who I am. Using Stephen S. Hall’s idea that exploration can be both inward and outward, I began visualizing how each part of my life connects like a map of experiences and relationships. I started building a visual layout of these connections, knowing it will keep evolving throughout the semester as I refine it into a final artifact. I also reflected on the skills and strengths I bring to my community and how they support the people and spaces that have shaped me.
First draft of Ideas and Inspirations
These were my first draft ideas for the project, centered on sharing the voices of my community. I wanted to focus on immigration, a topic that is deeply personal to me, and use this project to spread awareness. My goal was to share not only my own story and my family’s journey, but also the experiences of others in the immigrant community, with participation being completely voluntary and anonymous if preferred. I hoped to highlight the resilience, struggles, and contributions of immigrants in a respectful and meaningful way. My early artifact ideas included creating a video of collected stories, capturing images and videos of Mexican towns, designing a map, gathering survey responses, and incorporating the symbolism of the monarch butterfly.
Second draft of Inspirations and Ideas
Monarcas Poster that was shared
For my second draft of ideas, I continued focusing on current events and on sharing the voices of my community, especially around immigration, a subject that remains deeply personal to me. I refined my goal of highlighting the resilience, struggles, and contributions of immigrants in a meaningful and respectful way, expanding the project to include a Google Form where participants can choose to answer questions or submit a video. I also planned to share the project on social media to reach a wider audience. This draft includes a dedicated section for immigrant children to share their own stories, ensuring their experiences are represented and heard.
